Shin Splits (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)

Shin Splits (also known as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome) refers to pain along at either on the outer front part of the leg (Anterior Shin Splints) or the inner part of the leg (Posterior Shin Splints). Shin Splints usually happens to athletes who have recently intensified or alter their training routines. The muscles, tendons and bone tissue become overworked by the increased intensity of their activities.

 

  • Tenderness, soreness or pain along the inner or outer part of the lower leg
  • Mild swelling at the area injury

Treatments include pain relief modalities such as muscle stimulation and ultrasound, clinical massage, stretching and strengthening of muscle group.

Most of the time, circumstances like this just require a physiotherapist for assured recovery. However, if it is one of the rarer cases where signs and symptoms are not improving and unresolved, you may be referred back to the doctors for consultation and further investigation.
