Stroke

Strokes happen when there are problems with the blood supply to the brain. Reason being the blood supply is blocked or a blood vessel within the brain ruptures. Stroke is a medical emergency, and treatment must be sought as quickly as possible.

There are three main kinds of stroke:

  • Ischemic Strokes
  • Hemorrhagic Strokes
  • Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIAs) (also known as mini-strokes)
  • Confusion, most common among them are speaking and understanding difficulties
  • Numbness on one side of the body
  • Unable to see in either one or both eyes
  • Headaches
  • Walking disorientation (Issues with co-ordination and dizziness)

Stroke is a very serious medical emergency and should be treated as soon as possible. Prolonged of full recovery can lead to chronic problems as following:

  • Weakness or paralysis in one or both sides of the body
  • Issues with expressing emotions
  • Bladder control problems
  • Depression

Treatments include muscle stimulation, clinical massages, balance exercises and activity training.

Most of the time, circumstances like this just require a physiotherapist for assured recovery. However, if it is one of the rarer cases where signs and symptoms are not improving and unresolved, you may be referred back to the doctors for consultation and further investigation.
