De Quervain

De Quervain syndrome is a painful condition affecting the tendons on the thumb side of your wrist. If you have de Quervain syndrome, it may hurt every time you turn your wrist and/or clenching your fist. This is due to the tendons around the base on thumb side of the wrist are injured, irritated or inflamed.

  • Pain around the base of your thumb
  • Swelling at the affected area
  • Difficulty moving thumb or wrist when clenching the fist during activities
  • Popping or cracking sound when moving your thumb or wrist
  • Numbness at thumb and/or index finger

Note: If the condition is left untreated, the pain may spread towards and into your thumb, back to your forearm or both after a period of time. Pinching, grasping and movements of the thumb and wrist may aggravate the pain.

Treatments include pain relief modalities such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation, clinical massage, stretching and muscle strengthening.

Most of the time, circumstances like this just require a physiotherapist for assured recovery. However, if it is one of the rarer cases where signs and symptoms are not improving and unresolved, you may be referred back to the doctors for consultation and further investigation.
