Patellar Dislocation

Patellar dislocation is an injury at the knee, commonly caused by a direct impact or a sudden twist of the leg. It occurs when the patella/kneecap slips out of its normal position in the patellofemoral groove and generally causes intense pain.

  • Swelling of the knee
  • Severe pain at the front knee
  • ‘Clicking’ of the knee
  • Discolouration at the area of injury
  • Instability of the knee

Most of the time, circumstances like this just require a physiotherapist for assured recovery. However, if it is one of the rarer cases where signs and symptoms are not improving and unresolved, you may be referred back to the doctors for consultation and further investigation.
